Early Childhood Education: Focus of recent CAPE meeting

The Council for American Education (CAPE)

Board of Trustees meets twice a year to represent 20 US national organizations with non-government schools and programs. Together, the group speaks for over 80 percent of our nation’s private and independent schools, serving approximately 4.5 million students and their families. I have the honor of sitting on the board of directors representing the 33 state CAPE organizations. MISF is the Minnesota state CAPE.

It is this group that advocates for nonpublic education on the national level. Despite the fact that many different educational philosophies and established religions are represented, this group has been able to find common points of concern and criteria that is mutually agreed upon.

During the September 15-16, 2008 meeting, my collegues and I developed another position paper and criteria outline regarding the National Movement for Early Childhood Education Development and the Universal Pre-K. We had a presentation by Dr. Libby Doggett, Executive Director of the Pre-K Now in Washington, DC and have agreed on four criteria to measure Pre-K proposals on a state and national level.

Minnesota’s non-government education institutions represent a large group of Pre-K offerings from small rural churches to larger organizations. As soon as this paper is released to the public, we will post it on our web site. Stay tuned.
